Summary:
Kyiv Tech is Ukraine’s flagship web3 hackathon & builder community.
In September ‘22, more than 550 hackers met to build creative solutions to solve humanitarian crisis and Vitalik Buterin made his first ever visit to Ukraine. The event was made possible by sponsors Celo, Aragon, NEAR, Nym, Ethereum Foundation, Filecoin, Aave Grants DAO, Aurora and Unstoppable Domains. We also received support from Gitcoin, Optimism and zkSync as community partners. In terms of media, the event was covered by CoinDesk(Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin Appears at Kyiv Tech Summit to Support for Ukraine), Forbes(Ерік Шмідт та Віталік Бутерін одночасно відвідали Києв: про що говорили — Forbes.ua), The Block(Vitalik Buterin makes surprise appearance at Kyiv Tech Summit | The Block) & CoinTelegraph(Blockchain could help anonymously document war crimes), will be featured in the upcoming Ethereum Film(https://twitter.com/revrfg/status/1518204324815454208) and you can watch a documentary that was created by Coinbase here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ymuuUo1gGA
On Oct 13-15 2023, Kyiv Tech returns, with a larger dedicated & hybrid international hackathon. We are looking for sponsors to help with event expenses and fund bounties for hackers to build priority innovations on open source web3 networks. Describe what your project does or is aiming to do in 50 characters or less:
Kyiv Tech is Ukraine’s flagship web3 hackathon & builder community.
If available, please enter a link to your project below:
How far along are you?:
We are already in active organisation mode for the hackathon in terms of venue, sponsors, branding, merch, refreshments, content and hacker outreach / community building. The hackathon itself will take place on Oct 13-15.
Why did you pick this idea to work on? Do you have domain expertise in this area? How do you know people need what you’re making?:
We decided to found Kyiv Tech in mid 2022. Having raised $10M in crypto for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, including $2.5M from Vitalik Buterin, we understood concretely that;
a) Ukraine has an incredibly large developer community and,
b) People are spending an agonising amount of time in bomb shelters.
So, Kyiv Tech was born with the vision to host a hackathon in a bomb shelter in Kyiv that would enable people to build creative, web3 solutions to humanitarian problems, and spend their time underground using crypto to drive real world impact.
Kyiv Tech ‘22 set the precedent for an ongoing series of community led web3 events & gatherings in Ukraine, and now we’re organising a larger dedicated & hybrid international hackathon since the situation in terms of air defence in Kyiv has improved greatly, with people returning to living somewhat regular lives.
What’s new about what you’re making? What substitutes do people resort to because it doesn’t exist yet (or they don’t know about it)?:
We are the flagship web3 hackathon & builder community in Ukraine and have an extremely tight filtering process- only collaborating with world class web3 orgs to encourage hackers on the ground to build the future.
What’s your vision for how your project will impact The Graph and/or web3?:
The focus of Kyiv Tech hackathon is onboarding more developers into web3 and activating the existing, large web3 developer community in Ukraine to build priority innovations for open source protocols like The Graph. With bounties funded & curated by The Graph, we envision our hackers working proactively to build on The Graph Stack, contribute to the protocol, build tooling, subgraphs or dapps and push the boundaries of what is possible. An activation of this nature will enable The Graph to strengthen it’s awareness and presence in the Ukrainian ecosystem, where there is a lot of web3 developer talent, resulting in increased open source contributors and ecosystem builders, as well as general users of the protocol.
How will you measure success?:
- Quality of hackathon submissions
- Number of participants
- Number of first time web3 hackers
- Media visibility & outreach metrics
What milestones will you achieve in the coming weeks/months, with or without the grant?:
We are already in active organisation mode for the hackathon in terms of venue, sponsors, branding, merch, refreshments, content and hacker outreach / community building. The hackathon itself will take place on Oct 13-15.
Please select who you think will benefit from your project?:
Subgraph Developers, Other, Curators, Delegators, Indexers
How much funding are you looking for? (USD):
15000
Provide a breakdown of your requested funding:
Budget Breakdown
$15,000:
- $5,000 - hackathon bounties
- $10,000 - ops expenses (venue, comms, branding, merch, food, etc)
NOTE: any funds left from ops expenses will be reinvested in the Kyiv Tech local events, onboarding activities, etc.
Have you applied for (or already received) funding from somewhere else?:
Yes
If yes, please describe where you’ve received funding from and how much you have, or will, receive:
Kyiv Tech ‘22 was sponsored by Celo, Aragon, NEAR, Nym, Ethereum Foundation, Filecoin, Aave Grants DAO, Aurora and Unstoppable Domains.
