Grant Proposal: GirlScript Foundation

Grant ID: 8686au6vm

Summary:

This year is the second year of Web3Camp and we are planning to teach 20,000+ beginners in 50 boot camps across India. (400 learners per bootcamp)

We will also be giving scholarships so that attendees can learn for FREE and 50% of seats will be reserved for underrepresented groups. Not only this but we are targeting most of the boot camps in tier-2 and tier-3 cities where there are minimum to zero resources available and in bigger cities we will be conducting multiple boot camps to avoid travel difficulties.

We would love to partner with The Graph, host the interested team members as speakers and include a “Build a Subgraph” workshop in all 50 boot camps happening between the 20th of Nov to 20th of December, 2023.

Interestingly, the journey of Web3Camp will not just end with city boot camps but will open doors for Winter of Blockchain and Web3Camp Extended programs for attendees to either become a developer or entrepreneurs in the industry.

I have read and agree to the privacy policy:
true

Describe what your project does or is aiming to do in 50 characters or less:
In 2022, GirlScript Foundation decided to introduce Web3Camp with leading companies like The Graph and educated about 15000+ people in 51+ cities with 50% of seats reserved for women and underrepresented communities among other attendees.

If available, please enter a link to your project below:
https://web3camp.girlscript.tech/

How far along are you?:
With support from The Graph last year, we impacted 15,000 learners in 60+ cities ( Online and offline) and started their journey in Web3. We also conducted the second edition of Web3Conf
( Biggest Web3 Conference ) this year in August which helped us gain the attention of a lot of WEB3 learners in India.

For Web3Camp 2023, we have already onboarded 50 city organizers and have rolled out the scholarship form too. We have received 50+ Speaker applications for all the cities and have our calendar finalized with tentative venues.

Why did you pick this idea to work on? Do you have domain expertise in this area? How do you know people need what you’re making?:
GirlScript Foundation has always been initiating projects for tech awareness and development in India. We have our community running in 78 cities of India and have impacted more than 5,00,000 learners in past 7 years. Our community members are college students and thus we get to know honest reviews of students on their current interests. All our programs from the past two years that are running for the web3 audience have seen more than 1000 contributors applying in the first week of its launch.

What’s new about what you’re making? What substitutes do people resort to because it doesn’t exist yet (or they don’t know about it)?:
There are no offline boot camps happening in India for Web3 and thus, we initiated this last year. After the successful edition, we saw a lot of learners starting their entrepreneur journey in Web3 or getting placed in leading blockchains through our initiative.

What’s your vision for how your project will impact The Graph and/or web3?:
We would love to partner with The Graph, host the interested team members as speakers and include a “Build a Subgraph” workshop in all 50 boot camps happening between the 20th of Nov to 20th of December, 2023.

The graph is useful for Web3 developers and thus, we wish to make it more accessible for them to contribute.

How will you measure success?:

  1. Number of learners/city ( 400/city )
  2. Number of colleges/city ( 5/city )
  3. Number of developers interested in further opportunities ( 50% )
  4. Number of boot camps conducted ( 50 Offline Bootcamps)

What milestones will you achieve in the coming weeks/months, with or without the grant?:
We wish to reach 50 cities in the next month and help 20,000 learners start their journey in Web3. With the grant, we will be able to conduct boot camps and provide necessary facilities to organizers, speakers and attendees.

Please select who you think will benefit from your project?:
Subgraph Developers

How much funding are you looking for? (USD):
20000

Provide a breakdown of your requested funding:

  1. Conduction of SubGraph workshop in 20 cities.

( 1000$/city )

Along with it,

  1. Branding of The Graph in all creatives
  2. Inclusion of speakers from the graph in 20 cities.
  3. Schwag’s Inclusion for participants
  4. Newsletters to 100k community members

Have you applied for (or already received) funding from somewhere else?:
Yes

If yes, please describe where you’ve received funding from and how much you have, or will, receive:
We are willing to raise 100k$ for the smooth conduction of 50 cities and till now we have raised 30k$ from two sponsorships from Vistara Labs and Flipster.xyz .

Can you share any information about current/past web3 experience?:
For the past two years, GirlScript has introduced projects for open contribution/participation for beginners and learners. Projects like WEB3CAMP, WEB3CONF, WEB3 MEETUPS, and WINTER OF BLOCKCHAIN helped us reach the tier-two three cities of India teach 50,000+ learners and start their journey in web3.

Why are you interested in contributing to The Graph and/or web3?:
We see in India a lot of developers are looking for a 1:1 experience and through such workshops/boot camps we help the audience to get direct access to meet experts/companies/learners from the Web3 Field and create a healthy and safe space for learning.

Are you applying as a team or individual?:

Greetings!

Thank you very much for your proposal, but I all have a few questions regarding it:

  • How do you ensure the quality of education remains high across all 50 boot camps, especially with such numerous attendees?
  • What strategies will you employ to effectively target and fill the 50% reservation for underrepresented groups?
  • Could you provide more details on the criteria and process for scholarship selection?
  • How does the partnership with The Graph specifically enhance the learning experience at the boot camps?
  • What follow-up support or resources are available to attendees after the completion of the boot camps?
  • Can you elaborate on the “Winter of Blockchain” and “Web3Camp Extended” programs mentioned in the proposal?
  • Given the significant scope of the project, how will you ensure that the $20,000 funding will be sufficient to cover all necessary expenses?

Thank you!

Greetings @doxe01.eth ,

Thank you so much for asking these questions, I am happy to clarify them. Here are the answers to the questions:

  1. To ensure the quality of the content, we have pre-recorded all curriculum talks with renowned experts in the industry so that we can stream those in all boot camps, and the quality of the content remains similar everywhere. On top of this, we are sending speakers and mentors to each boot camp for offline talks and Q&A sessions as well, so the learners also get to clear their doubts simultaneously.

  2. GirlScript Foundation has developed a huge database of around 100k+ subscribers in our newsletter over the last 6 years. These subscribers are mostly from underrepresented groups, so the boot camp information is sent to them via email for bigger outreach. Also, each city organiser has been instructed to create local campaigns to raise awareness about getting equal representation.

  3. With scholarships, we don’t want to be too strict, as GirlScript believes in supporting beginners, so anyone who applies takes a first step towards learning, and we appreciate it. However, we will shortlist those who have taken the application form seriously and whose responses reflect their passion for learning something new.

  4. If we partner with The Graph, it will give the boot camps greater significance, as The Graph is a pioneer in the blockchain industry. Also, the quality of the content will become technically enhanced, and we can even host Subgraph workshops in every city, which will be helpful for attendees as well as add value to the curriculum.

  5. We are hosting two programs post-Web3Camp boot camps: Winter of Blockchain as well as Web3Camp Extended. So the attendees can keep learning and contributing even after the boot camps. We will also create a support group for Web3Camp to connect attendees with mentors, speakers, and sponsors to encourage peer-to-peer learning and continuous support even after boot camps. They will also be added to the foundation’s mailing list and will be informed about all of our programs so that the learning continues.

  6. Winter of Blockchain is a 3-month-long open-source contribution program for on-chain projects. Here, different projects, companies, and organizations that are building something on blockchain can submit their projects to receive coding contributors, and the participants will get a chance to sharpen their blockchain development and tech skills. The program is inspired by GirlScript Summer of Code, which we have been running for the last 6 years and had more than 14,000 developers this year.
Web3Camp Extended will be a program where the top 10% of participants from the City Bootcamp Ideathons will be selected to take a 3-month-long learning and building program with us where they will ship real-life blockchain projects that they pitch during the ideathon. We will connect them with industry leaders as well as VCs who will guide them further.

  7. The budget for city boot camp is $3000 per city, and the overall budget is $150k. We have raised some funds already from other sponsors. If The Graph can provide us with at least $20k, it will be a great help, but we are open to further support as well to meet our goal.

If you have any further questions, please let me know. I apologize for the delay in the reply.

Thanks for submitting your community grant application. I have a few questions for you after reviewing the submission:

  • In the beginning of the application you state that you’ll be providing workshops in 50 cities. But after the budget section you state it will be only 20. Can you confirm which is accurate?
  • Can you provide verification of the newsletter having 100k subscribers?
  • In response to the question “How far along are you” you mentioned that you had support from The Graph last year. Can you provide more details about that and what the support consisted of?

Thanks again for applying. Looking forward to your responses.

Hello @Mr.1776 ,

Thank you for the response. Here are the answers to your queries.

  1. Sure so the title sponsorship is of $50k which gives access and promotion to all 50 boot camps but as we have asked for gold-level sponsorship of $20k in support we will offer promotion in 20 boot camps along with other gold-level benefits as mentioned in sponsorship brochure shared here:

  2. Sure here is the screenshot of our Brevo account. Plus we have some emails from other programs as well which are not added on the platform yet from 2023 Q2 and Q3

  3. Last year we got a speaker from The Graph for a workshop along with $15,000 in sponsorship support last year.

This year we have raised $40k so far from Vistara Labs and Flipster plus we are speaking with Chainsafe, Sandbox India, and ICP blockchain for final confirmation. We have also completed one boot camp today in Pune. You can check it here: Link to LinkedIn post

Hope this was useful for your understanding. I would be happy to answer any follow up questions.

Looking forward to e-meet with you on Tuesday at 10:00 UTC

2: You requested $20000, is there a detailed breakdown of how you will spend the budget?

3: You already applied and got funding from another resources, May I ask where and is there info can show the deliverables

Hi @JonathanZy ,

Thanks for the questions and for your kind words. Happy to answer all of your amazing questions

  1. We have all sponsor tasks listed along with the boot camp feedback form for getting an NFT certificate at the end of the program. For The Graph education, we will ask the learners to share their learning compulsorily on social media, and also join the community channel. We will also run a 60-min subgraph workshop along with Q&A in all 20 boot camps for the sponsorship.

  2. The budget is $3000 per 2-day boot camp. We are planning to organize 50 boot camps with a budget of $150k. We have asked for $20k in sponsorship in return for promotion in 20 boot camps out of 50 for The Graph with an average of impacting 400 learners per boot camp and $1000 per city boot camp for 2 days and 8000 learners in total.
Please see the sponsorship brochure and last year’s project report here:

The budget is allocated to recorded speakers, offline speakers, schwags, travel and accommodation of speakers as well as distribution of NFT certificates along with paying editors, etc. for editing videos and designers. We have also hired program managers and interns to manage the program and coordinate with different city organizers. Two members from our core team are traveling to each city to ensure smoother conduction.

  1. The deliverables are shared above in the sponsorship brochure. We have raised gold sponsorship from Vistara Labs and Flipster and we have already done 2 boot camps in Pune and Mumbai.

With warm regards.

@HimikaPrabhat greetings!

You have not previously appeared at a grant presentation, can you please tell us why? Because we need to understand if you still want to continue working on the grant.

We are happy to hear from you!

Hello @doxe01.eth,

Apologies for not being able to make it to the grant presentation. Our team is traveling continuously to all the cities for conducting the boot camp and thus it became impossible to join that day.

We definitely wish to continue working on the grant and thus we booked the slot for the next Tuesday ( which was yesterday) but we didn’t receive a confirmation over email.

We request you to help us with a new slot so we can share the progress of the project till date.

Till now, we have completed 5 successful boot camps in Pune, Mumbai, Vizag, Raipur, and Hyderabad, and now we are all set to do it in Bangalore on 8-9th of December!

Here are a few links for your reference:-

Looking forward to a second meeting

Unfortunately, at this stage, due to some circumstances caused by difficulties in working with the grantee and some inactivity of the grantee, the committee came to a consensus decision to close this Grant Proposal.

Thank you for submitting this proposal, and you are encouraged to stay engaged in the Graph community. You are also welcome to submit new grant applications in the future with proposals that may generate stronger community support.

Best Regards,
